We will all remember 2020 as a black spot on our spontaneous lives. So many plans, businesses, ceremonies, all locked behind the bars of our own homes. I find it pretty unsettling that while some of us are starving to death due to unemployment, or lack of protection from the pandemic, we are complaining about having to sit at home and laze around while blaming government as a favorite pastime.
Amidst all this, West Bengal and Orissa were hit by the cyclone Amphan. You might‘ve experienced it or seen it over the news. It was the strongest cyclone since Aila in 2009. It’s also the most destructive cyclone to take place in North Indian Ocean ever.

There are people in Kolkata city who are rioting because they don’t have electricity for more than a week since the cyclone struck. Meanwhile, in the Sunderbans, a UNESCO world heritage site, some people lost their houses and livelihood to the cyclone, some have to travel through torso-height clogged waters to get food supplies. Farms have been clogged by saline water, making the land futile for years . Due to broken embankments and flooding of sea water, all fresh water fishes in the ponds have died. Also, the fencing to keep out wild animals from the human habitations has broken, leaving locals vulnerable to tiger attacks. And it has only gotten worse due to the persisting situation of Covid-19, making them unable to migrate.

All this mishap and devastation has left our government and the society crippled. We figured rather than pointing fingers, getting down to help the distressed is more sensible in this hour of need. Desinomadz in association with GhulGhuli-ঘুলঘুলি, a govt. registered NGO( IV-190400041/2020), is taking the initiative to mend these broken livelihoods. In times of such dire crises, we turn to our kin for help. Let’s remember that above all religions, all relations, all differences, humanity is our kin.

We call upon you all to help us with anything you can. More the hands joined, merrier it gets for the people who are suffering.
