I wonder on whose vacation list the Andaman and Nicobar islands might not be present. Missing out on that one would be a sin to one’s wanderer soul. Andaman Island, initially inhabited by multiple groups of indigenous tribes, was later used as a penal colony during the British occupation of India. The then-prison-house, cellular jail, also known as kaala paani, is now a great tourist attraction.
Today, the structure isn’t just a carcass of British rule, it is countless cries and immortal hopes of Indian blood trapped in concrete. There’s a light n’ sound show at dusk everyday that will bring you to tears and fill your heart with gratitude.
Maybe that restless soul of yours needs some deep strong purging. White shimmery beaches and the mesmerizing emerald green water will make you fall in love as you set your eyes upon this nature’s bounty of art. But hey, don’t forget to take the sunscreen with you!
If you have ever wanted to find Nemo, then this is just the place for you. Just put on the scuba suit and plop you go into the sea. Don’t need to worry if you’re not a swimmer, you could get a trainer- a hot one, may you be lucky. The beauty underneath the water might give you a heart attack though.
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are one of the few undiscovered gems that have escaped the clutches of mass tourism. Nicobars are off limits to tourists. Residents of these islands mainly belong to the ‘Jarwa’ tribe, fondly known as the adivasi. They are less than 500 in number and do not interact with outsiders. North Sentinel Island is home to one of the most isolated human populations in the world.
Barren Island has an active volcano. It is inhabited except for a few species of animals and birds.
There are no concrete-and-glass resorts offering all-inclusive deals, no nightclubs and no shopping malls. There aren’t even any street salesmen offering to sell you gewgaws at “a special price, my friend – just for you.”
What the Andamans do have to offer is clear turquoise water with one of the largest variety of coral and fish life anywhere on the planet, fresh whole grilled lobsters and seafood platters for sending your taste buds into delirium, endless stretches of tranquil scenic beauty to gawk at, unbelievably big coconut crabs, and a chance to break a sweat – go trekking through the nature trail from Mt. Harriet to Madhuban and enjoy the rare forest life, flora and fauna.
